I am doing research for Ashoka on social-business collaborations. They have developed a new model for these types of partnerships called Hybrid Value Chains, which combine the strengths of private enterprise with those of citizen-sector organizations (CSOs). (Here's more info: http://www.ashoka.org/hvc)
I would love to hear from anyone who is aware of partnerships or collaborations between businesses and CSOs in Africa that both achieve development objectives and generate revenue for the actors involved. An example might be a micro-insurance scheme where the CSO helps a private health insurer develop a product appropriate for the BoP, then uses their local networks to distribute it. The results are increased access to a crucial health care product for low-income consumers and revenues shared between the CSO and private insurer.
Heard of anything like this? Know of projects, in any sector, that fit this profile? I'd love to hear your ideas.
